A convicted sex offender, named a suspect in the disappearance of a missing SDSU coed, may be ready to share what he knows about the case, according to his attorney.
John Steven Burgess appeared before a judge in a Los Angeles courtroom on charges of failing to register as a sex offender. Burgess has also been named a suspect by the Orange County Sheriff's Department in connection with the disappearance of Donna Jou, 19. The pre-med student was last seen June 23 at a party hosted by Burgess.
NBC 7/39's sister station in Los Angeles reported that the attorney for Burgess was trying to work out a plea bargain. The attorney said Burgess would tell police everything he knows about Jou if he's given immunity from the charge of failing to register as a sex offender.
Otherwise, if Burgess admits to living at the address where it's believed Jou was last seen, he would essentially be pleading guilty to failure to register at that address, KNBC reported.
During Tuesday's hearing, the judge doubled Burgess's bond to $500,000. The judge said that if he posts bail, he must wear an electronic monitoring bracelet.
Burgess, 35, had been free on $250,000 bail, which was revoked by a bonding company after his arrest in July in Florida, according to Sandi Gibbons with the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.
The convicted sex offender left California shortly after Jou's disappearance and was arrested twice in Florida. He was first arrested on July 25 in Jacksonville, after police spotted him trying to dispose of cocaine. He was arrested again on Sept. 20 in Florida on suspicion of stealing DVDs. He was returned to Los Angeles by bail agents last week and is now jailed again on $250,000 bail.
Investigators said Jou met Burgess through Craigslist.com. They said he passed off another man's photo as his.
The San Diego State University honors student was last seen by her family on June 23 as she rode away on the back of Burgess' motorcycle, said Jim Amormino of the Orange County Sheriff's Department.
Jou's family has offered a $15,000 reward for information leading to the pre-med student's safe return, with her mother appealing to Burgess to reveal what happened to her daughter.
"I'm going to celebrate her birthday," Nili Jou said Tuesday. "Hopefully, she's here to attend that."
In 2002, Burgess was convicted of three counts of battery and, the next year, he was found guilty of committing a lewd act on a child. He was sentenced to 146 days in jail, placed on three years' probation and required to register as a sex offender.
A judge doubled the bail for
John Burgess to $500,000 on charges he failed to register as a sex
offender.
Authorities in southern California say Burgess, 35, is a "person of
interest" in the disappearance of Donna Jou.
The San Diego State University student was last seen at a party with
Burgess in June.
Authorities arrested Burgess on drug charges in Jacksonville in July.
He was extradited to Los Angeles where he posted bail.
