PALMDALE - On Monday, Sept. 11, a child abduction occurred at 30th Street East and Avenue R in Palmdale, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department authorities. They are continuing their investigation into the incident.
CHP Officer Patrick Kimball of the Traffic Management Center for Los Angeles County provided a description of the abductee, as well as the original vehicle. The victim is Joliet Cedano, a five-month-old hispanic female child with brown hair and eyes, wearing a red and white shirt and blue jean overalls. The suspect, who is unknown, was driving a red 1989 Buick Regal with the licence plate number 2MFC968.
According to Sheriff’s Department officials, detectives have learned that a male hispanic adult had approached the foster mother of the victim at a local park. The male demanded the victim and fled in a vehicle being driven by a female hispanic adult. The male was located just before 6:00 p.m. and was held for questioning.
According to Lt. Don Ford of the Sheriff’s Department’s Palmdale station, there have been three or four different vehicles that the suspect has been driving since Sept. 11.
Ford provided details on the suspect, Maria Cedano Ayala, as a 5-foot-5-inch, female hispanic with brown hair and eyes, about 43 years old, and weighing 150 pounds. He also disclosed information about the current vehicle.
"The vehicle we are looking for is a black Chevrolet pick up truck with the license number 7D92423," Ford said.
On the day the abduction was reported, Sheriff's Department authorities stated that the male held for questioning provided additional details. They mentioned that they now believe the victim's biological mother, Ayala, has the child. She was driving a 1995 Blue Mercury Marquis with a license plate number of 5RSK813. An amber alert was issued at the time.
Kimball mentioned the status of the Amber Alert.
"We have activated our CMS signs throughout the state, detailing the child description and suspect vehicle so that any citizens who witness the child or suspect vehicle can call their 911 operator," Kimball said.
According to the Sheriff’s Department, detectives from the major crimes bureau issued a $100,000 warrant for Ayala. The man believed to have originally abducted the child has been identified as Jose Martinez of Palmdale. He is in custody and is being charged with child stealing. His bail is set at $40,000.
