MASON COUNTY -- The search for a Mason County woman missing since November came to an end Monday.
The county coroner says the body of Karen Vance was found around 11 am in the Sand Ridge State Forest.
She was found less than 500 yards from her Goofy Ridge home.
Vance's family and law enforcement combed the area around her home for weeks.
Monday morning, some people walking through the forest found her body and notified authorities.
An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
Missing From Goofy
Ridge Illinois
HAVANA - Mason County authorities came up empty handed Sunday after an extensive search involving search dogs, the Illinois State Police, the Illinois Department of Conservation, and the Mason County Sheriff's office in the continued investigation involving the disappearance of a Goofy Ridge resident.
Karen Vance, 52, of Goofy Ridge, was reported missing by her husband on Nov. 22 when he came home from work and found her gone. Repeated searches of the Sand Ridge State Forest and other areas near Vance's home using a search dog, a team on horseback, foot searches and helicopters with thermal imaging equipment found nothing.
At the request of Vance's family, Mason County Sheriff Wayne Youell said on Sunday authorities searched several areas close to where Vance disappeared, including the Chautaqua Lake area, the Spring Lake area, and north of the Mallard Club Tavern in Goofy Ridge.
On hand to help this time was the Illinois Search Dogs, a volunteer group based in central Illinois that provides certified search and rescue K-9 teams to assist in locating missing people. They do not charge for their services.
The search team began with an approximate 300-yard radius surrounding the boat dock at the Chautaqua Lake Refuge area. They came up with nothing. Also at family request, they searched the Spring Lake area, said Youell, and once again the dogs were unable to pick up any scent.
The dogs did pick up a scent north of the Mallard Club in Goofy Ridge, Youell said, but an ensuing foot search was unsuccessful.
The area had already been searched once by foot, Youell said, with no results.
They also took the Illinois Search Dogs out to the Vance property, said Youell, and came up with nothing again.
They started the search at about 10 a.m. on Sunday and continued looking until about 6 p.m. No new clues were found.
Youell said the case is still a top priority and they continue searching for Vance. Anyone with information regarding her whereabouts is asked to call the Mason County Sheriff's Department at 543-2231.
Vance, a white female, is 5 feet 2 inches tall and 190 pounds, with brown/gray hair and green eyes. She may have been wearing a green wind breaker at the time of her disappearance.
While many families give thanks on Thanksgiving, a family in Mason County is in tears, waiting for their missing loved one to come home. Karen Vance of Goofy Ridge was last seen at five, Wednesday morning.
Vance is 52 years old. Five foot two. She weighs 190 pounds, has blonde hair and green eyes. She may also be wearing a green windbreaker.
In the deep forest, among the prickly branches and fading leaves, family, friends and volunteers search for clues. They are looking for any signs that will trace them to Karen Vance. Every second counts. It could mean the difference between life and death for the 52 year old woman who has been missing since Wednesday morning.
“Her husband left at 4 AM and tried to contact her and couldn’t get in any contact with her all day long,” Vance’s son-in-law, Greg Jansen said.
When Vance’s husband Ron returned home around 4 in the afternoon, she was nowhere to be found.
“She left her purse, keys, coat, we found out this morning she is wearing a green windbreaker, her cell phone’s at home, even her reading glasses are at home,” Jansen added.
Authorities are focusing a lot of their attention on the wooded area across the street from Vance’s house. That’s because a friend says several weeks she had mentioned she wanted to get lost in the woods. Her family members say she suffers from depression.
“She has been on medication for it,” Jansen said. “I talked to her on Monday and she seemed perfectly fine.”
Various law enforcement agencies have been methodically searching the area on horseback, by helicopter, and by foot since Wednesday night. The Mason County Sheriff’s Department is investigating. They say it is too early to say if foul play is involved. Vance’s children gather at the house. The original plan was to celebrate Thanksgiving with the entire family. Mom was supposed to cook.
“It’s a little bit tough,” Jansen said. “We’ll make it. I never run out of hope, keep on going.”
The family is not giving up… they say they’ll wait until she comes home.
