November 8th, 2007 - Prosecutors were forced to subpoena the children of a missing Chicago suburban mom to testify before a grand jury about the disappearance of their mother, FOX News learned Thursday.
Lisa Stebic's children reportedly were the last ones to see their mother alive, along with Craig, her husband, and were only interviewed by police once, in May 2007, when authorities questioned them at school.
Craig Stebic, who has custody of the children, and his lawyer previously declined bringing the children before a grand jury or a neutral child advocate to interview them, police said.
Standing in grass that covered her shoes, Debbie Ruttenberg turned to look at the huge picture of her sister plastered up behind her.
"I remember what she was doing in that picture," she said. As she spoke, vehicles on U.S. 30 slowed, taking in a scene of news vans and camera crews.
A billboard about the search for missing Plainfield mom Lisa Stebic was installed Tuesday on U.S. 30 just northwest of I-55 in Plainfield.

Ruttenberg hoped they were also looking at the brand-new billboard, which includes a photo of Lisa Stebic taken about a year ago as she held their sister Jamie's infant daughter at a family birthday party. Lisa Stebic has been missing since April 30.
"It's very sad," Ruttenberg said, looking at Lisa's face. She turned away.
"Even though the emotion is overwhelming, we have to go to the task at hand."
CBS Outdoor donated space on three billboards to the family. They are at U.S. 30 northwest of I-55; I-55 near Caton Farm Road; and I-55 near the First Avenue exit in Chicago.
Lisa's family hopes the billboards reach someone who doesn't keep up on the news but could have a piece of the puzzle investigators need.
"We're not going to allow Lisa Stebic to become a statistic. We refuse to do that," said Lisa's cousin Melanie Greenberg.
Well-traveled sites
The billboard on U.S. 30 was up by 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. Two news crews were already there, filming it for midday broadcasts.
The space costs upward of $1,500 to rent, said Michael Wells, general manager of CBS Outdoor. The company also paid for the vinyl, which was printed with a graphic design created by a friend of Lisa Stebic's family.
Besides a picture of Lisa's face, the billboard asks "Where is Lisa Stebic?" and includes the $60,000 reward offering -- which has climbed to $62,000, thanks to a weekend fundraiser -- and telephone tip line, (815) 267-7217. The billboards will be up for six weeks, Wells said.
About 16,000 drivers will pass the U.S. 30 billboard daily, and 36,000 will pass the I-55 billboard near Caton Farm Road, he said. The biggest billboard, on I-55 near First Avenue, will go up Monday. About 95,000 drivers will see Lisa's face there each day, Wells said.
"It's a wonderful billboard, so everyone should see that who's driving south from the city," he said.
Three months missing
Monday will mark three months since Lisa was last seen at her Plainfield home. Police on Tuesday said there is no new information in the case.
Earlier this month, police said they narrowed the focus of their missing person investigation to Lisa's husband, Craig. Ruttenberg said she called Craig when she heard police had labeled him a "person of interest" in Lisa's disappearance.
"He wasn't surprised," Ruttenberg said. "Craig was always a person of interest. He was the last person to see her. He understands that."
On his attorney's advice, Craig has not talked to police since a preliminary interview early in the investigation. He has also blocked police from interviewing his children, ages 10 and 12.
Lisa's family would like the children to talk to police, Greenberg said. Investigators believe the children could have information vital to solving the mystery of what happened to their mother.
"It's so strange. It's still surreal," Ruttenberg said. "It's very disheartening that we don't know what happened. We're going to figure it out, no matter how long it takes. One way or another."
