12/10/07 - Troy Tyo's ex-wife, Dena "Winky" Thompson, 38, and her husband, Kristofer Thompson, 28, were to be arraigned today on open charges of murder, records show.
Earl Stedman said he and his son were looking for a lost puppy Saturday when he saw the truck at the former gravel pit near 29th Street and 22nd Avenue.
The gravel pit had been filled in, cleared off and was being sold for development.
Stedman said the truck's windows were covered with soot. He said he opened the door to find the body behind the wheel.
"It looks like they set a garbage bag on fire in the cab, but they didn't open the window, so it sputtered out," Stedman said.
He said he quickly shut the door and left to alert police.
Later, Stedman said, he saw the police search the Thompson house on Paulson Road in Gobles, not far from where the truck was found.
The Thompsons were in Allegan County Jail until their arraignment, scheduled for early this afternoon.
Tyo's neighbors expressed shock.
Linda Smith said he was a great addition to the Dumont Creek Estates neighborhood when he moved in a year ago.
"He was a wonderful guy, and we'll miss him," she said. http://blog.mlive.com/
12/09/07 - Saturday residents in Gobles in Van Buren County found Tyo's truck, and inside it a body.
Police believe the body is Troy Tyo, but a autopsy will confirm it Monday.
But in just a few hours, the entire case of Troy Tyo unraveled.
At 5:00p.m. Saturday, his truck was found, but even before that two people were being questioned about his disappearance.
Those two turned out to be Tyo's ex-wife and her new husband.
Monday he'll be arraigned for murder and she'll be charged as an accessory.
The key is when he didn't pick his children up from school, anybody that knew Troy knew that something had happened, something was wrong because his kids meant the world to him," says Tyo's long-time friend Rick Day,
Day says he and the family were always hopeful, but the find does not come as a surprise.
"We're relieved that they found the body," he says. "Hopefully it will give some closure to the family, it's been a pretty traumatic week."
Day, who's also Allegan's mayor, says this murder shouldn't cause alarm as it's not a random killing.
"Troy was divorced, but he was happily re-married and moving on, this just didn't happen overnight," he says. "Troy was happy and he was content, he was doing well, there's just really no explanation."
Now that there are some answers, Troy's family wants to say thank you, and move on.
