MONTGOMERY, Vt. -- The family of a northern Vermont teenager continued to hope for her safe return Tuesday night.
Brianna Maitland's parents said they have not heard from their daughter in more than a week. She was last seen leaving her job at a the Black Lantern Inn in Montgomery.
Maitland's employer issued a statement about her disappearance.
"The Black Lantern family expresses great concern for the well-being of Brianna Maitland and is distressed at her disappearance. Our thoughts and prayers are with Brianna's family and those involved in searching for her."
Police are not calling her disappearance suspicious yet.
Rumours are spreading, in Maitlands former high school, and in other schools and the community, however.
They are being acknowledged and completely refuted by both Vermont State Police and Maitland's family.
Amid all this speculation, police are trying to continue their investigation.
State police say a forensics team will come in Tuesday to examine Maitland's car.
They're looking for anything that could help the search, and it's only one part of the ongoing investigation.
"Over the weekend, there were a few leads that had come in," said Lt. Thomas Nelson. "We conducted several interviews up in the Montgomery area."
Maitland's parents are still out and about every day doing their own search, and they believe Brianna's alive. They also hope the rumors subside.
"My brother called and he really kept me going when he said that Brianna is the type of person that you'd see on 'Fear Factor' or 'Survivor,'" said Kellie Maitland. "She can be tough."
The Maitlands also said that Brianna had taken several self-defense courses, and wouldn't have gone without a fight is she was abducted.
They have been searching the area near where her car was found, but so far, it's yielded nothing concrete on her whereabouts.
Maitland's parents did find a woman's fleece jacket near where the car was found. They gave it to police, who identified it belonging to a different woman. They're not saying whether it's linked to the disappearance, however.
The state police did say they were going to contact the FBI Monday, but no word on whether they will have any involvement in the investigation.
